George Howe

George Howe (1876-1936), professor of Latin Language and Literature from 1903 to 1936, received an AB at Princeton (1897) and a PhD from Halle (1903), and had also studied at Oxford and the American Academy in Rome before being appointed professor at UNC. From 1919 to 1922 he was dean of the College of Liberal Arts. He was one of the organizers of the Southern Section of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South and for several years associate editor of Classical Journal. He is the author of Latin Sight Reader (1912), Roman Literature in Translation and Greek Literature in Translation (both 1924, with G.A. Harrer), A Handbook of Classical Mythology (1929), and, with E. K. Rand, The Vatican Livy and the script of Tours (1918. Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome, v. 1; with E.K. Rand). Cf. William S.
