The Department begins to make decisions on admissions and financial aid for new students in January. Although the deadline for applications is January 1, it is recommended to mail applications and materials even earlier in order to avoid the last minute crunch in the mailing, and in administrative handling. The Classics Department does not consider separately applications for admission in the spring semester; applicants interested in beginning work in the spring semester must meet the normal deadlines for consideration and be admitted for the academic year. The Department urges applicants to take the Graduate Record Examination no later than the November before their application. The Department awards both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, but all applicants are assumed to be interested in completing the Ph.D. if possible, so be sure to check the answer (yes) on the application after the question "If a Ph.D. is available, are you interested?". Applicants should check their online application often to see if items have been received by the Department.
