Sara Mack

Professor Emerita of Classics

Sara Mack received her Ph.D. from Harvard in 1974. After a number of years teaching Latin and Greek at the University of California at Santa Cruz, she taught at UNC from 1976 to 2004. She is interested in poetry of all kinds. Her dissertation was on Vergil; much of her teaching has centered on the poets of the Augustan Age and she has written books on Vergil and Ovid. She is currently looking back from the Augustan Age to the Greek tragedians, especially Euripides. Another research interest, an early form of it published in Arion, is Ovid’s “Acis and Galatea” as it developed from Homer and Vergil and was, in turn, developed by later European and English poets.
