Serena Witzke is a first-year graduate student in Classics pursuing a Ph.D. in Roman History. In 2004 she received a B.A. in Classics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, as well as an M.A. in 2007 with a thesis entitled, "The Censure of Powerful Women: Roman Monarchy and Gender Anxiety".
In 2005 she curated a Classical exhibition at the McMaster Museum of Art, and her
research was published in the event's monograph entitled, "The Togo Salmon Centenary
Exhibition: The Classical World and Its Influence." She also presented a public lecture,
"The Use and Abuse of Mythological Iconography in 15th-20th Century Art" to celebrate the
exhibition. More recently she gave a talk on "The Abuse of (Wo)men: Gender Tension and
Roman Political Criticism". Her academic interests include Roman historiography, Tacitus,
ancient women, and Latin grammar.
