Students must have completed an undergraduate degree and two years of ancient languages at the college level when they enter the program. This requirement may be fulfilled by two years of Latin, two years of Greek, or one year of each language. Applicants may be taking the language(s) at the time of their application, but acceptance into the program in that case will be contingent upon successful completion of the relevant courses. Students interested in the program who have no languages should take beginning Latin and beginning Greek through the University's Friday Center for Continuing Education, through an intensive summer program (for a list of such programs, see www.summer-classics.com), or at any school conveniently near them, and then apply to the Department's Post-Baccalaureate program.
The program has rolling admissions. You may apply any time between December 1 and May 15 for admission the following fall. You will be notified of the Admissions Committee’s decision within a month of your completed application. Students wishing to apply for admission to the program should submit the following:
1. Completed Application to the Post-Baccalaureate Program.
2. Transcripts from all colleges or universities attended.
3. Two letters of recommendation from teachers familiar with your work and with your goals in entering the program.
4. Your own statement, not more than two pages double-spaced, explaining your goals in entering the program and your thoughts on how you would like to design your personal program of study.
5. If available, please submit your GRE scores. We use these in order to advise you rather than for admission to the program.
Once students have been told they have been accepted by the Classics Department, there is still one more important step. They need to apply separately to "Part-time Classroom Studies" through The Friday Center in order to register for courses. They should follow the application procedures for Part-time Classroom Studies. For additional information, please consult the Friday Center's website.
