The study of Greek and Latin forms the core of all the majors. Three of the majors, Greek, Latin, and the combined major in Greek and Latin focus on the study of the classical languages and literatures in their original form. The major in Classical Archaeology focuses on the material culture of the ancient world, its art and archaeology. Courses offered cover the archaeology of Greece and the Aegean, Rome and its empire, the Mediterranean in the Bronze and early Iron Ages, Anatolia, Egypt, the Ancient Near East (Turkey, Syria-Palestine, and Mesopotamia), and Byzantium. The major in Classical Civilization provides the student with a broad perspective on the classical world through the study of its literature, art and society. Courses offered are very diverse, covering a wide range of material, including Classical Mythology, the Age of Pericles, Epic and Tragedy, the Romans, Women of Greece and Rome, and Technology and Culture in the Roman Empire.
The Latin education major, for those pursuing a career of teaching Latin in high school, although taught by the Classics Department, is administered through the School of Education.
