Little preps for career in academia

Set to graduate next fall, Jaboa Little is a major in Classical Civilizations with a minor in History. The Monroe native recently won the department’s Herrington Prize for her stellar academic work and the Nims Scholarship to attend the College Year in Athens Summer Program.

Q.

Why are you studying Classics at UNC?

A.

I’m studying Classics at UNC because I have always been interested in Greco-Roman society. However, it wasn’t until I decided to take CLAS 131 Classical Mythology with Prof. (James) Rives, that I decided to pursue Classics.

What has been one of your favorite memories of studying Classics at UNC and why?

A. 

One of my favorite memories of studying Classics has been grasping the basics of the Latin language. It amazed me how much better I understood English after one semester of Latin.

What has been your favorite course in the department and why?

A.

My favorite course at UNC has been the Age of Augustus course. My favorite emperor is Octavian, so it was great being able to learn more about him and the transition from republic to empire. Additionally, so many fascinating poets, like Ovid and Virgil flourished during this time period.

What has been your biggest accomplishment at UNC and why?

A. 

My biggest accomplishment at UNC has been getting an A in Greek 101. Ancient Greek is a very complex language and beginning it after starting Latin made it seem even more complicated, but I managed to do pretty well in Greek so far.

What is up next for you?

A. 

I hope to graduate in December 2015 and go on to get my master’s in Greek and Latin to gain a better understanding of both languages before going on to get my PhD. Eventually, I would like to become a Classics professor.
